Paula Deen's The Lady & Sons

One the most famous celebrity chefs over the past 20 years is without a doubt Paula Deen.  Her main restaurant, which she started with her two sons (hence the name of it), is The Lady and Sons.  Featuring southern style home-cooking, this restaurant is a true treat for anyone visiting Savannah.  It's location is very central at 102 West Congress Street, right next to the City Market area.

Our trip there was on a Sunday, and during this day they are only open from 11 AM to 5 PM with a buffet-style meal option.  The buffet features some of Paula's best known dishes such as her southern fried chicken, BBQ pork, mac and cheese, creamed potatoes and various others.  You also get dessert options such as her famous Peach Cobbler and Gooey Butter Cakes.  We tried all of these and they are all OUTSTANDING!  Leann is already looking to start using her recipes here at home.

The one thing that you need to be fully aware of before eating here is the reservation process.  You cannot call up to make reservations in advance.  Each day, the hostess stand opens at 9:30 AM to start taking reservations for that day.  You must be there in person on the day of your reservation.  The line for this though can get to be quite long.  While we were there, it was literally around the block, and we arrived at 9:15 AM.  We ended up waiting more than an hour to make our reservation and got one of the last spots.  I'd highly recommend having someone in your party there by 8:30 AM to ensure a spot for your meal.  And if you don't believe a line for a restaurant can be that long, just check out the video below of what it looked like.

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace

As all Girl Scouts probably know, their founder, Juliette Gordon Low, was born in Savannah, GA.  From here, she started the Girl Scouts movement, which today has over 10 million members.  When in town, you'll notice plenty of Girl Scouts memorabilia around, although we didn't notice any Girl Scout cookies!

A tour is offered on a daily basis of the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low.  On the tour, you'll learn about her life history, as well as that of her family.  For anyone who has ever had an affiliation with the Girl Scouts, this is definitely a tour to check out while in Savannah.  And for those that don't have any history with the Girl Scouts, you can still appreciate the rich history that is described in the tour and learn about the founding of a very positive and delicious-cookie selling organization.

A Walking Tour of Savannah

When we first decided to book our trip to Savannah, we did what most people do when figuring out what to do...check out Trip Advisor for ideas.  The #1 posted activity for Savannah was to take a walking tour, and the top place to do it with is Explore Savannah.

We made reservations through the site to take a 2-hour walking tour of the city with Bobby Davis, and his saying is more than true, "Savannah is a city best viewed from your feet, not from a seat".  When you get to the city you'll see various bus and trolley tours taking visitors around the city.  And while I'm sure the drivers of them are very knowledgeable and friendly, it can't compare to the one-on-one attention you get with a walking tour guide.

After setting up our reservation, meeting up with Bobby was very easy with the directions he provided for us.  Even when we were unfortunately running a bit late, he had no problem waiting for us and was very courteous and understanding about it.

During the tour we passed through many of the various historic sites in the city such as Chippewa Square (where the Forrest Gump "bench" scenes were shot), the Green-Meldrim House, Forsyth Park, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and others.  In addition to some of the more famous spots in the city, by taking us on foot, he was able to show us more specifics and hidden gems around town such as gorgeous private gardens that can't be seen from a trolley.

Bobby allows any of his guests to customize the tour he gives them as much as they want, which you can't do through a trolley company, to allow you to get the most out of your tour.  For a 2 hour tour he charges only $35 a person, so it's something you really can't beat.  For anyone visiting Savannah, I'd highly recommend to make a reservation with Bobby at www.exploresavannah.com.
